13 Years of Trust: High-Precision 3D Scanner Helps Mold Company Improve Quality and Efficiency

Shoe molds are complex. Traditional measurement tools couldn't keep up. Learn how Jurun Mold solved the challenge with SHINING 3D Metrology—and why they've stayed with it for 13 years.

If you’ve ever worn a pair of shoes—sports shoes, casual shoes, or even high-end leather shoes—chances are they were made using a mold. Behind every well-fitting sole and perfectly formed shoe upper lies a complex piece of tooling: the shoe mold.

Shoe molds are anything but ordinary. They come in complex curves, deep cavities, and intricate patterns that need to match the design exactly. A tiny error in the mold means the final shoe won’t fit right, won’t look right, or might not even come out of the mold cleanly. For manufacturers who create these molds, precision is everything—and speed is just as important.

Dongguan Jurun Mold Technology Co., Ltd. specializes in shoe sole molds and  the production of integrated molded footwear. It has built a reputation for delivering high-quality molds on tight schedules. But getting there took more than just skilled craftsmanship. It took the right tools—and a partnership that has lasted over a decade.

A Partnership Built on Precision

Jurun's relationship with SHINING 3D began in 2011. At the time, they were looking for a better way to handle the measurement challenges that come with shoe mold production. Traditional tools—calipers, micrometers, and manual gauges—worked, but they had serious limits. They were slow, they could only measure single points, and they simply couldn’t capture the full shape of a complex mold surface.

That’s when they brought in the OptimScan Series. As a High-Precision 3D Inspection System, it offers non-contact measurement with accuracy up to 0.005 mm, reliable 3D measurement, and high resolution for fine details. What started as a trial quickly turned into a 13-year partnership—and counting.

Where 3D Scanning Fits In

In shoe mold production, there are two critical measurement points where precision and speed matter most.

The first is at the very beginning: measuring the last or reference shoe provided by the customer. This is where the entire mold development starts. Traditionally, this was done manually using various gauges and tools. It was slow—at least one full day just to get the measurements. With 3D scanning, that same job takes just over 10 minutes.

The second is after the mold is cast. Once the rough mold comes out of casting, it needs to be measured to determine where and how much to machine. In the past, workers used micrometers to measure point by point, a process that took two hours or more. And because it was point-based, there was always some uncertainty when deciding the machining surface. With 3D scanning, the measurement is done in under 20 minutes, and the data is complete—every curve, every contour, every detail.

The Real Impact

When you add up the time saved across both stages, it makes a real difference. Jurun estimates that 3D scanning has cut 1.5 days from their typical 15-day production cycle—a 10% reduction in lead time. And because the data is more complete and more accurate, the final mold quality has also improved.

“We’ve been using SHINING 3D equipment since the company was founded. The accuracy is high, and it helps us pinpoint the mold line exactly—that’s critical for us. After all these years, the equipment is still very stable. If I had to give it a score, I’d give it a 95.”

——Mr. Tao, head of Jurun Mold

Why It Lasted 13 Years

For Jurun, 3D scanning isn’t just a fancy technology—it’s a practical tool that solves real problems on the shop floor. It needs to be reliable day after day, accurate enough for demanding jobs, and versatile enough to handle whatever shape comes next. The OptimScan Series delivers on all three, with accuracy up to 0.005 mm and high resolution for fine details, backed by SHINING 3D’s expertise in high-accuracy optical 3D metrology.

That’s why a tool introduced in 2011 is still in regular use today. And that’s why a partnership built on solving measurement challenges has lasted for 13 years—and counting.
