Intelligent Quality Inspection Solution for Automotive OEMs: Automated 3D Scanning and Inspection

Automated 3D scanning and inspection solution for automotive OEMs: how BKF improved quality, reduced inspection time from 1 hour to 5 minutes, and enabled scalable, data-driven manufacturing.

Background

Bangkok Metropolis Motor (BKF) is a well-established automotive parts manufacturer with over 50 years of experience supplying global OEM brands. As production volumes increased, BKF faced limitations in its traditional inspection methods and needed a more efficient and scalable process to maintain strict quality standards.

VR Intelligenceโ€™s Role

VR Intelligence (VRI) specializes in Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), industrial automation, and robotic integration, providing end-to-end smart manufacturing solutions. By combining automation hardware, intelligent inspection software, and data management systems, VR Intelligence helps manufacturers implement highly efficient, traceable, and scalable production and quality control workflows.

Challenges

Before automation, BKF relied heavily on manual tools such as vernier calipers and taper gauges. This approach had clear limitations: inspecting each part could take up to an hour, manual data entry was prone to inconsistencies, scaling for high production volumes was challenging, and reporting and data utilization were inefficient.

BKF needed a solution that could automate inspections, digitize data, and integrate seamlessly with production workflows.

Solution: An Automated 3D Scanning and Inspection Workflow

VRI designed and implemented the Smart Q system, a fully automated inspection workflow, for BKF. The system centers on high-precision 3D scanners, combined with robotics and inspection software for data analysis and visualization. The workflow is fully digital and standardized.

Automated 3D Scanning: Core Layer for Accurate Data Acquisition

High-precision 3D scanners from SHINING 3D serve as the systemโ€™s measurement tool, capturing full-field data rapidly while maintaining high repeatability suitable for automated workflows. Compared to manual measurements, the scanning system reduces human error and provides a complete digital dataset for subsequent analysis and reporting. The 3D scanning process works with a robot reduces operator intervention and improves throughput. The workflow transforms inspection from a manual, labor-intensive task into a standardized, automation-ready process.

Intelligent Data Analysis and Real-Time Feedback

All scanned data is processed by the PolyWorks software. It compares the 3D scan data to CAD models, generates deviation analysis, and visualizes results on a real-time dashboard. Inspection data can be stored in a database for traceability and rapid retrieval.

BKFโ€™s Fixture Innovation: Optimizing Workflow Efficiency

To further streamline operations, BKF developed CF block-less, a fixture that simplifies part setup for scanning and eliminates the need for traditional complex fixtures. This innovation reduces preparation time and storage requirements while fully supporting automated inspection workflows, making the overall inspection process more efficient and seamless.

Results

By using the automated inspection workflow and innovative fixture design, BKF achieved significant improvements in quality control and efficiency:

  • The inspection time has been reduced from approximately 1 hour to just 5 minutes per part

  • Measurement accuracy increased through full 3D surface analysis

  • Consistent, repeatable inspections enabled by automation

  • Manual data entry eliminated

  • Faster reporting and improved data traceability

In conclusion, VRI helped BKF successfully establish an efficient quality inspection process. Compared to traditional methods that rely on a single tool, this approach not only standardizes the inspection process but also improves measurement and inspection accuracy, ensuring that quality control is fully aligned with modern automated production environments.
