Delivering Quality at Speed: How Full-Field Inspection Became a Reality for Custom Small-Batch Manufacturing

40 minutes to 1 minute per part. Discover how Innorapid moved from sampling to 100% full-field inspection with a complete SHINING 3D metrology toolkit.

In today's manufacturing world, "fast" and "precise" don't have to be a trade-off. But for companies that specialize in custom, small-batch production, meeting both can feel like walking a tightrope. Every part is different. Quantities are small, but quality expectations are anything but.

That's the reality for Zhongshan Innorapid Co., Ltd., based in Zhongshan, China. The company focuses on the rapid delivery of custom, small-batch products. When a customer needs 50 pieces of a specialized part—and needs them in two weeks—every step of the process has to be efficient. Especially inspection.

The Challenge: Moving from Sampling to Full-Field Inspection

Before adopting 3D scanning, Innorapid relied on traditional tools: CMMs, vision measuring systems, calipers, and height gauges. Each measurement was a single point, and each part had to be flipped and refixtured multiple times. Completing a full-field inspection on a single part could take anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour.

For a batch of 50 parts, with only one or two days allocated for inspection, full-field inspection simply wasn't possible. Sampling was the only option. But sampling comes with risk. Occasionally, an out-of-tolerance part would slip through—and customers started asking for full-field inspection reports.

That's when Innorapid knew they needed a different approach.

The Solution: A Complete 3D Metrology Toolkit

Innorapid brought in a full suite of SHINING 3D metrology solutions, starting with an automated desktop 3D inspection system. With it, a single part could be scanned in one minute,  and a full-field inspection could be completed in just a few minutes. That meant for the first time, they could inspect every part in a batch before delivery.

But Innorapid's product range is wide—parts come in sizes from as small as 5 mm all the way up to 1–2 meters. One system couldn't cover everything. So they expanded their toolkit with multiple SHINING 3D metrology solutions.

For small parts with fine details, they rely on the OptimScan Series. As a high-precision 3D inspection system, it delivers accuracy up to 0.005 mm and high resolution to capture even the smallest features. For larger parts and molds, they use other systems to cover different size ranges and applications. For example, for molds over 1 meter, they use FreeScan Trak series; for highly portable needs, they rely on SHINING 3D portable 3D laser scanner, which is easy to take to supplier sites that lack inspection capabilities, allowing them to follow up on quality issues and resolve them quickly on-site.

What made the decision easier was consistency. As Mr. Chen, leader of the inspection team, explains:

"Before choosing SHINING 3D, we evaluated other brands. We wanted to stick with one brand because different brands have different workflows, and that gets complicated for our team. SHINING 3D offers a wide range of equipment, and the operation feels consistent across products. Plus, the after-sales support gives us confidence. When we run into issues, they're quick to help."

The Results: Quality You Can Stand Behind

With full-field inspection now part of their standard workflow, Innorapid has eliminated the risk of out-of-tolerance parts reaching customers. They can meet tight delivery schedules without compromising quality, and they have the data to prove it—every part, every batch.

For a company built on rapid, custom production, that's a game changer. It's not just about avoiding customer complaints; it's about building trust. And with the right measurement tools in place, Innorapid can focus on what they do best: delivering quality parts, fast.
