High-Accuracy 3D Scanning for Construction Machinery Manufacturing: The LiuGong Story
Discover how high-accuracy 3D scanning improves quality inspection, fixture verification, and reverse engineering in construction machinery manufacturing at LiuGong.
Customer Background
As one of China's leading company of construction machinery manufacturing, Guangxi LiuGong Group Co., Ltd. has spent more than six decades driving innovation across the industry. From breakthrough technology development to intelligent manufacturing and comprehensive quality management, innovation has become an integral part of every stage of LiuGong's manufacturing process.
To support its ongoing digital transformation, LiuGong partnered with SHINING 3D and adopted multiple high-precision 3D scanners from its metrology brand. The scanners are now deployed across a wide range of measurement applications throughout the manufacturing process, helping LiuGong improve dimensional inspection, machining accuracy, and product development efficiency.
Challenge
As construction machinery continues to evolve toward higher performance and more sophisticated designs, manufacturers face increasing challenges in dimensional inspection and quality control.
Many exterior panels and structural components feature complex freeform surfaces that cannot be accurately measured using conventional tools such as tape measures or calipers. At the same time, fixture positioning and assembly accuracy require fast, reliable inspection methods that minimize production downtime. In product development, legacy components often lack complete CAD data, making redesign and product upgrades both time-consuming and labor-intensive.
LiuGong needed a versatile measurement solution capable of delivering high accuracy, portability, and efficient digital data acquisition throughout the entire manufacturing workflow.
Solution
By introducing SHINING 3D's high-accuracy 3D scanning technology, LiuGong established a digital measurement workflow that supports quality inspection, fixture verification, and reverse engineering.
Digital Inspection for Reliable Quality Control
Unlike traditional measurement tools, the handheld 3D scanners accurately capture complex geometries regardless of part size or surface complexity. Engineers can quickly generate high-resolution 3D data and directly compare scan results with CAD models, allowing dimensional deviations to be identified immediately.

FreeScan Trak Nova enables fully wireless scanning with a maximum tracking volume of up to 2.6 m × 2.2 m, making it ideal for measuring large-scale workpieces with ease.
"Many of our complex exterior panels simply cannot be measured using conventional tools," said Mr. Li, Technical Engineer at LiuGong. "With a 3D scanner, we can capture the entire part in minutes and compare the scan directly with the CAD model. Any deviation is immediately visible, making inspection much faster and more reliable."
Fast Fixture Inspection for Higher Machining Accuracy
The initial production of the main frame of the construction machinery can not be separated from the fixture, the positioning accuracy of the fixture directly affects the production quality of the product.

Production fixtures involve numerous complex spatial dimensions, making them difficult to inspect accurately and efficiently using conventional measuring tools. During production, high-accuracy 3D scanners enable fast, on-site inspection of fixtures with minimal disruption to manufacturing operations. Their portable design allows engineers to verify critical dimensions and geometric tolerances directly on the shop floor, ensuring that fixtures consistently meet the required precision standards.
Accelerating Product Development Through Reverse Engineering
High-accuracy 3D scanning has also become an essential tool for product development.
For many legacy products where original CAD models are unavailable or incomplete, engineers can digitize physical components and quickly reconstruct accurate 3D models for redesign and optimization. This reverse engineering workflow eliminates one of the biggest obstacles in upgrading older products while significantly reducing development time.
One example involved the redesign of an operator cab. Instead of recreating the geometry manually, engineers captured the existing structure using 3D scanning and used the digital model as the foundation for the new design, greatly improving development efficiency.

Powered by advanced wireless and standalone 3D scanning technology, FreeScan Omni enables both 3D scanning and 3D inspection to be completed entirely on the device—no PC required.
"For some of our older products, the original CAD data is no longer available," Mr. Li explained. "Now we can capture the physical part with a 3D scanner and build an accurate digital model for further optimization. The scanning process is highly efficient, the accuracy is excellent, and the system is very easy to use."
Results
Today, high-precision 3D scanning has become an integral part of LiuGong's manufacturing workflow. From digital quality inspection and fixture verification to reverse engineering and product innovation, the technology enables faster, more accurate, and more efficient measurement throughout the production lifecycle.
By adopting digital 3D metrology, LiuGong has strengthened product quality, improved manufacturing efficiency, shortened development cycles, and accelerated its transition toward smarter manufacturing.
